UT Legal Clinic Honored for Extraordinary Community Service

This fall, the Legal Clinic at the University of Tennessee College of Law was recognized by both the Knoxville Branch of the NAACP and Legal Aid of East Tennessee for its extraordinary community service and legal representation of clients who cannot afford an attorney.

First-Year Innovations

With the leadership of Joy Radice, Brian Krumm and former Dean and Clinic Director Doug Blaze, the College has revamped the 1L curriculum to include four new experiential elements. First, each student enrolls in an experiential section of either Civil Procedure I or Torts, in which they participate in three simulation-based assignments.

Domestic Violence Clinic Forges New Partnership

For several years, students in our Domestic Violence Clinic, under the guidance of adjunct clinic faculty member and former family court judge Jo Ann Lehberger, have represented individuals who have filed pro se petitions seeking orders of protection. This fall, Professor Lehberger forged a partnership with the area’s Family Justice Center.

Clients Awarded Clemency as Clinic Closes

Our Federal Clemency Clinic, established two years ago by Professors Wendy Bach and Joy Radice, officially ended its work on January 20th. The clinic was established in response to the Obama administration’s interest in identifying non-violent drug offenders who might merit commutation. The Federal Clemency Clinic at UT submitted fourteen petitions to the Office of the Pardon Attorney.
