Katz Law Library room to be named in honor of Spenser Powell

The College of Law will pay tribute to the memory of Spenser F. Powell by naming a library study space in his honor. Powell, a 2017 graduate of the College of Law, died on May 26, 2018 as he was participating in a half marathon in his hometown of Memphis, Tenn.

Penny White Receives SEC Faculty Achievement Award

A College of Law professor and former judge has been recognized for her work with a 2019 SEC Faculty Achievement Award, the SEC announced today. Penny White, the Elvin E. Overton Distinguished Professor of Law, serves as director of the Center for Advocacy and Dispute Resolution in UT’s College of Law.

Alumna to become Chief Judge of the Eastern District of Tennessee

University of Tennessee College of Law alumna Pamela Reeves has been named Chief Judge of the Eastern District of Tennessee and will be sworn in April 1. Reeves will succeed U.S. District Judge Thomas A. Varlan who has held the chief judgeship for the past seven years.

Law student selected for UT Knoxville Advisory Board

University of Tennessee College of Law first-year student Johnelle Simpson has been appointed to serve as the student member on the UT Knoxville Advisory Board. During a meeting of the board on Wednesday, Interim Chancellor Wayne Davis recommended Simpson for the position.

College of Law offers assistance with income tax filing

The College of Law Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to those with an income of $55,000 or less, those with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

Tennessee Law team dominates Phi Alpha Delta mock trial competition

For the second consecutive year, a University of Tennessee College of Law team has won the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International’s Mock Trial Competition. During the competition on Feb. 22 and 23 in Arlington, Va., two UT College of Law teams, consisting of four students each, competed against 26 other teams.
