Fellowship Details

In addition to the scholarship benefits afforded to Winston Fellows (full tuition and fees), the program also provides a variety of academic and professional enrichment opportunities inside and outside the classroom.

Research Assistantship – Each fellow will serve as a Research Assistant to a professor(s) doing work in their areas of interest (10 hours per week during the academic year), for which they will be paid a generous stipend that can be used to cover living expenses or other associated costs of attendance. Fellows’ work assignments will be managed by the Associate Dean for Faculty Development, who will work with each fellow individually to ensure optimal matches with professors.

Personalized Advising – Fellows will receive personalized faculty advising about curricular and extracurricular opportunities that will help advance their professional goals. Public Interest Law Fellows will be encouraged to take a variety of courses pertinent to their area of interest, to play an active role in the Winston College of Law Pro Bono program, and to enroll in and complete at least one clinical program through Winston Law’s Legal Clinic. Business Law Fellows will be encouraged to pursue the Concentration in Business Transactions (administered through the Clayton Center for Entrepreneurial Law), to play an active role in the Winston College of Law Pro Bono program, and to enroll in and complete the  Legal Clinic’s Transactional Law Clinic.

Summer Work Experience and Support – Fellows will be assisted by Winston Law’s Career Center in securing paid or unpaid summer employment placements in public interest and business law positions (both, broadly defined) for the summers following their first and second years. Business Law Fellows will also receive support in this regard from the Clayton Center. Fellows who work in unpaid internships will be compensated in an amount commensurate with Knoxville area summer associate salaries. 

Programming and Activities for Fellows – Winston Fellows will participate in various educational and professional activities that will enrich their learning experience. These activities will include an annual Winston Fellows Retreat; dinners and gatherings with distinguished alumni and leaders within the profession; and special opportunities to participate in bar meetings, professional conferences, and other events in the fellows’ areas of professional interest.

David Cantrell (‘21) is an in-house litigation attorney at Clayton Homes, a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, and national home builder of site built and manufactured homes. In that role, Cantrell manages litigation across multiple business units within the company, safeguarding the company’s legal interests and advising the company’s business leaders on potential exposure and risk. Cantrell says, “During law school, I decided I wanted to represent businesses in corporate and commercial litigation. I am incredibly fortunate to be doing exactly that in my current role at Clayton Homes.”
