Celebrating 25 Years: The 2025 Julian Blackshear, Jr. Scholarship Gala

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Winston College of Law, together with the Black Law Students Association, marked the 25th anniversary of the Julian Blackshear, Jr. Scholarship Gala this March, a milestone celebrating a quarter-century of commitment to fostering a broadly diverse and welcoming community. What began in 2001 to honor one of the college’s trailblazing alumni has grown into a premier event that inspires generations of future lawyers.

The Julian Blackshear, Jr. Scholarship has provided years of opportunities for students at Winston Law. Named in honor of Julian Blackshear, Jr. (‘70), one of the first African American alumni of the college, the scholarship reflects his legacy as an attorney and civic leader. Since its inception, the fund has been sustained by generous contributors, including students, alumni, faculty, community members, law firms, and corporate partners.

In a full circle moment, this year’s gala not only celebrated a 25-year legacy but also welcomed Lillian Blackshear (‘08), daughter of Julian Blackshear, Jr., as the keynote speaker. Member in the Nashville Office of Bass, Berry & Sims PLC, Lillian shared a powerful message, drawing from her career in public finance and her leadership in civic and professional communities. Her remarks highlighted the importance of perseverance, service, and using one’s legal skills to uplift communities. She called upon young lawyers to practice with courage and to honor the legacy of those who came before by championing justice and equality.
